For Government Employees

FOR GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES

Certification for Government Professionals

ORBIT Global Certifications recognizes the public servants who grow local economies. This guide explains how government employees earn and keep an ORBIT credential, from eligibility to agency sponsorship and renewal.

PUBLIC SERVICE

Why certification matters in public service

Government professionals make decisions that shape local economies, often in public view. An ORBIT credential gives that work an independent, verifiable standard. It documents your expertise in economic development, workforce strategy, destination marketing, or chamber leadership, and it gives agency leadership, elected officials, and the public a credential they can confirm in seconds through our verification system. Agencies that sponsor ORBIT certification invest in the professionalism of their teams, build a shared standard of practice across departments, and strengthen leadership pipelines and succession planning. Sponsorship signals to elected officials and the public that the agency holds its people to an independently verified standard.

WHO IT’S FOR

Who this guide is for

ORBIT candidates work across the public sector, including:

  • City, county, regional, and state economic development offices
  • Workforce development boards and agencies
  • Publicly funded destination marketing organizations and convention and visitors bureaus
  • Chambers of commerce and business improvement districts
  • Port, airport, and convention center authorities

CREDENTIALS

Choosing your credential

Government employees apply for the same credentials as every ORBIT candidate. Senior executives typically pursue the CDEX. Leaders aligning workforce and destination strategy choose the CWDE. Marketing and commerce professionals choose the CDMC. Early-career professionals start with the Resilience Series (CERP, CDRP, and CWRP). Senior chamber executives pursue ORBIT CCE, the flagship designation for chamber leadership and board governance. Full program details are on the Certifications page.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility

Eligibility follows the same standards published for each credential, including professional experience in a relevant role. Government titles vary widely between agencies, so equivalent experience in economic development, workforce, tourism, or chamber leadership counts toward eligibility. If you are unsure whether your role qualifies, email certifications@orbitcertified.org and we will help you identify the right credential.

Applications are currently paused while we process a high volume of submissions and recertifications through January 1, 2027. Questions about an already submitted application? Email certifications@orbitcertified.org.

SPONSORSHIP

Agency payment and sponsorship

Many government candidates are sponsored by their agency, and many others choose to self-fund. Both paths are fully supported, and sponsorship is never required to apply or hold a credential. Agencies may pay certification fees on an employee’s behalf. If your agency has questions about paying for an employee’s certification, contact us at certifications@orbitcertified.org and we will work with you directly.

RENEWAL

Keeping your credential: renewals

ORBIT credentials are valid for three years, with continuing education and renewal requirements that keep your expertise current (ORBIT CCE is valid for five years, with renewal on the same cycle). Renewal notices and instructions are sent to credential holders before expiration, and current students can find renewal resources on the Current Students page.

FOR EMPLOYERS

For agencies and supervisors

Employers and institutions can confirm any ORBIT credential in seconds on the Verify a Credential page, powered by Accredible. Active credential holders also receive discounted registration for the Meridian Conference, with details announced for each conference.
